SML Proofreading

Proofreading/copyediting comes naturally to me. An avid reader since I was a child, I have always noticed errors of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and use of incorrect words in writing and speech. I’ve often been asked to be the last set of eyes for books, newsletters, brochures, business letters, and other written works.

I started SML Proofreading in June of 2019. Since then I have copyedited or proofread: a history of the local American Legion post; a humorous fitness book (Yes, such a thing exists! And it works!); a general fiction novel; memoirs; newsletters; a YA horror novel; a YA fantasy novel, and I have transcribed an 87-page 60-year old handwritten journal into a Word document, followed by another journal from the same client.

Prior to this, in 2018 I proofread a book by someone who had sailed around the world. This was followed up by another memoir from the same publisher. I enjoyed the work, the clients were very pleased, and I started my business as a result.

When not long out of Bates College, I proofread the Webster’s II Riverside Beginning Dictionary Teacher’s Guide (Riverside Publishing Co., 1984).

Just a few years later I wrote the humorous Googan’s Guide: Deep-Sea Fishing for Novices with the amazing illustrations of Rockport, Massachusetts artist, Victor Pallazola.

In addition to proofreading/copyediting, I  critiqued a fantasy book in 2020 (which I later proofread), and in the early 2000s I critiqued the non-fiction book Dead Men Tapping: The End of the Heather Lynne II, written by Kate Yeomans (McGraw-Hill, 2004).

I have successfully completed the course “The Keys to Effective Editing” through the Enterprise Center at Salem State University, Salem, MA and a CMoS (Chicago Manual of Style) course through the EFA. I have also attended webinars on copyediting fiction through the EFA and a class on working with Indie authors with Tanya Gold, also through the EFA.

I served as a judge for the IPNE (Independent Publishers of New England) awards 2021-2023 and plan on continuing to do so in the future.

In high school I was voted “Class Bookworm.”  I’m an incurable punster and am a former award-winning member of the International Save the Pun Foundation (Please don’t hold that against me.)

My book Proof or Consequences!, an illustrated collection of print clippings made laughable due to typos, bad spelling, wrong word usage—complete with humorous comments—came out in March of 2021 and is available on Amazon.
