Tyler Loveless

Editor and Researcher

I work with non-fiction and academic authors to craft compelling book proposals, comb through archives, develop budding manuscripts, and clean up final drafts. My clients have successfully published their manuscripts with HarperCollins, Hachette, Macmillan, NYU Press, MIT Press, Taylor & Francis, and elsewhere.

“I have no words to express how much my paper was advanced thanks to Tyler’s fantastic editing and insightful reading!”
— Tali Jaffe-Dax, Rutgers University

I’ve edited book proposals for best-selling authors and collaborated on multiple books now in print, including: Love & Whiskey by Fawn Weaver, The Women’s Revolution by Muriel Fox, Jill: A Biography of the First Lady by Julie Pace, Burl: Journalism Giant and Medical Trailblazer by Jane Wolfe, and Skin Disease and the History of Dermatology by Scott Jackson. Additionally, my own research has appeared in academic journals, edited volumes, and online magazines.

“Tyler helped me to trim, see the important pieces, and sharpen my argument…. My only regret is not getting in touch with him sooner.”
— Marie Sarita Gaytán, University of Utah

I support authors at all stages of the writing process by providing background research, line edits, and comprehensive revision plans. Together, we can work on improving textual ambiguity, thematic patterns, argument structure, and more. My services include:

Research: Can’t find what you’re looking for? I’ll add depth and context to your project by sourcing records from newspaper archives, university collections, courthouses, genealogical resources, academic journals, historical societies, and local libraries. Additionally, I have extensive experience navigating the Library of Congress and the National Archives. Using the resources and databases at my disposal, I can locate contact information, reverse-engineering references, draft literature reviews, and provide first-rate fact-checking services.

Book Proposals: Ready to pitch your manuscript to agents and publishers? They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. My most popular service, I write, develop, and consult on proposals for both trade and academic books.

Developmental Editing: Looking for feedback? I’ll perform a careful analysis of what’s working well and what can be improved in your manuscript. I’ll evaluate the foundations of your text—including audience, argument, and structure—and provide extensive, detailed recommendations and line edits.

Line Editing: Is your manuscript in need of a tune-up? Send me your latest draft, and I’ll provide line edits and detailed comments on paragraph and sentence structure, clarity, concision, organization, and word choice, all while making sure your manuscript reads as smoothly as possible.

Coaching: Feeling a little lost? Don’t know where to start? I’ll meet with you regularly, one-on-one (in person or virtually), throughout the life of your project, providing support and guidance during each stage of the writing and publishing process.

I hold a B.A and M.A. in Philosophy from George Washington University, where I was a Loker-Rice Graduate Fellow, and I have studied Critical Theory at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and Birkbeck, University of London. I currently serve as an editor at the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and I have supported multiple projects for The Trace.

“Tyler is one of the most gifted and tireless researchers I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.”
— Evelyn M. Duffy, Open Boat Editing

Previously, I advised multinational clients on labor rights issues for Sorini, Samet & Associates, and I led the communications team for three years at the Institute for International Economic Policy. My college newspaper, The Hatchet, received the Associated Collegiate Press’ National Pacemaker Award during my year as managing editor, and I am a winner of the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award. Originally from Mississippi, I live and work in Washington, D.C.

“Tyler works with excellent efficiency. He is meticulous, clear, and very well-organized.”
