Academic publishing is mysterious and isolating—but it doesn’t have to be! Many academics struggle to transform their dissertations into publishable books, put together book proposals, and convert chapters into journal articles. Academic editors, especially those with developmental or structural expertise, are in a prime position to help.
Publication coaching focuses on helping scholarly writers think through their book manuscripts, journal articles, and book proposals before sending them to a publisher. The publication coach functions as an accountability partner to provide support for short- or long-term projects, and offers a safe space to for authors to work through “underbaked” ideas with a colleague who understands the challenges they face.
In this 90-minute webinar, we’ll discuss what kinds of support potential clients might seek, and how to identify your ideal clients. We’ll also cover how to market your services, and how packaging your services can increase their appeal to clients. And we’ll address the kinds of ethical concerns you might encounter to prepare you for working with scholarly authors, like how a publication coach’s feedback differs from feedback the client gets from a peer reviewer or an acquisitions editor. You’ll learn everything you need to know to get started supporting authors toward bringing their work to life.
This webinar is geared to editors who already have experience with academic editing, working with academic writers or texts, and/or graduate training at the MA or PhD level.
Leslie Castro-Woodhouse (she/her) is the founder of Origami Editorial, an academic editing business focusing on helping scholars achieve their publishing goals. In addition to academic developmental and copy editing, she also works with scholarly authors one-on-one to support their ongoing writing practice, hash out ideas, formulate reachable project milestones, and reach their publication goals. Her training includes a PhD from UC Berkeley and an editing certificate from ACES/Poynter Institute; she also brings experience as a former journal editor and scholarly author (her book, Woman Between Two Kingdoms: Dara Rasami and the Making of Modern Thailand, was published by Cornell University Press in 2020).
