Many writers are seeking community, accountability, and understanding. One way to find that space and framework is through writing groups, which allows writers to explore narrative with a diverse group of people who each bring their unique perspective to the process. The support of a professional editor can add value that many writing groups lack, and this ultimately leads to the creation of a broader community of writers who will think of you first when they are ready for editing.

In this 60-minute presentation, Genevieve Clovis will discuss four common types of writing groups and important aspects to consider when starting your own editor-run writing group. You’ll learn how to offer encouragement and guidance from a non-biased, professional standpoint, providing writers with relevant resources, craft-centric advice, deadlines, or simply the space and time to write. The support you offer can be as flexible as you need it to be, and can vary depending on the type of group you decide to run. Regardless of how you choose to show up for your writers, hosting these groups helps you demonstrate your knowledge and build trust. Some group participants may become editing clients; others may promote your business to their colleagues. No matter what, you’ll create a valuable community—and have fun doing it!
