Providing feedback is part of the editorial process, but it isn’t only about the dreaded red pencil. Clear, collaborative, and encouraging but honest feedback motivates writers and gives their revisions focus, resulting in better writing—and a stronger editor-client relationship, which often leads to future work and referrals. In this session we explore techniques for improving feedback, whether you’re writing simple queries or urging a client to reconsider their structural approach to a longer narrative. We also discuss how to tell if your style is effective, why listening is essential to good feedback, and what to do when clients come back with a challenge.
